ArcelorMittal Q1 2008 Earnings Results

May 14th, 2008 by James Moss in ArcelorMittal, Finance

ArcelorMittal reported its Q1 2008 earnings today achieving $157/ton of EBITDA for the quarter, the same rate as Q4 2007. You can compare the EBITDA result against a number of other steel producers on the Nerds of Steel earnings spreadsheet. Or you can see the full set of company reports including video and audio of the webcast on the ArcelorMittal site.

Steel Manufacturers’ Association Presentation

Below is a presentation I made recently at the SMA Board of Directors meeting in Florida. It deals with the issue of organizational size in today’s steel industry and asks some questions (more than providing any answers) about how the structure of steel organizations will change as they deal with much different dimensions of scale and scope. It also contains some provocative “Zipfian” statistical analysis of industry structure that raises questions as to how consolidation might proceed both in the US and globally.

In the end, there is no argument for or against big or small organizations here. Mittal after all was producing less than 500KT 20 years ago. But in the future, our industry will be populated by much larger organizations than it is today. Organizational innovation is going to be vital to the strategic health of any company of any size that wants to remain successful and independent. February 13th, 2008 by Tony Taccone in ArcelorMittal, Finance, Gerdau

ArcelorMittal and Gerdau Ameristeel both released Q4 and 2007 full year results today. These results have been added to the NoS quarterly financial results spreadsheet. With the exception of US Steel, all the companies we have entered into the spreadsheet so far have achieved very similar EBITDA/ton results for 2007.  Excluding US Steel, the range is $123 per ton to $135 per ton.

ArcelorMittal and Borusan hot strip mill venture in Turkey

October 23rd, 2007 by Jessica Wagner in ArcelorMittal, Turkey

Don’t miss the announcement about the ArcelorMittal and Borusan venture in Turkey.  I am not surprised ArcelorMittal had something bigger planned in Turkey since they didn’t get what they wanted with Erdemir.
