Last Friday TimkenSteel announced Q4 and full year 2015 earnings. EBITDA per ton shipped in Q4 was negative $86, an improvement over the negative $147 the company posted in the third quarter. TimkenSteel’s EBITDA and operating income per ton have been added to the Nerds of Steel earnings spreadsheet.

Nucor announced Q4 and full year 2015 financial results this morning. EBITDA/ton was $105 on steel shipments, down from $115 in Q3. You can see the numbers for Nucor and the other companies tracked by Nerds of Steel in the spreadsheet behind the graph that appears below.

US Steel announced Q4 and full year 2015 results yesterday after the market closed. The company’s Q4 EBITDA per ton fell to a negative ($38) per ton, down from a positive $20 per ton in Q3. Under current market conditions, US Steel expects to be near break even on an EBITDA basis in 2016.

Worldsteel reported crude steel production in China at 64.4 million metric tonnes in December, 5.2% lower than in December 2014. Taking into account Worldsteel year-end revisions, full-year output in 2015 was 2.3% lower in 2015 than it was in 2014.

In addition, Chinese net finished steel exports (exports minus imports) in December were 9.5 million tonnes, 5% higher than in December 2014, while full-year net exports were 26% higher in 2015 than in 2014. Net exports as a portion of full-year crude production rose from 10% in 2014 to 12% in 2015.

Q4 2015 earnings spreadsheet

Several mills are releasing Q4 and full year 2015 earnings this week. Starting things off are Steel Dynamics and AK Steel. AK’s EBITDA per ton jumped from $75 in Q3 to $108 in Q4, while Steel Dynamic’s EBITDA fell to $62 from $94. Later this week we’ll get results from US Steel, Nucor and TimkenSteel. As results come out we’ll update the Nerds of Steel quarterly earnings spreadsheet.

Worldsteel published December and full-year 2015 global crude steel production on January 25th. World crude steel production was 126.7 million metric tonnes in December, 5.7% lower than in December 2014. Full-year 2015 production was 1,623 million tonnes, 2.8% lower than in 2014.

Chinese crude production accounted for 50% of full-year 2015 world output and showed a 2.3% drop between 2014 and 2015, accounting for 41% of the total world decline. Other important changes in full-year output between 2014 and 2015 include a 10.5% drop in output in the US, a 1.8% fall in the European Union 28 countries (driven by declines in Italy, the UK and France), a 15.6% fall in the Ukraine, a 7.4% drop in Turkey and finally, a 5.0% decline in Japan. Indian output, in contrast, grew 2.6% between 2014 and 2015.
