Worldsteel published July, 2023 world crude steel production yesterday. World crude steel output was 158.5 million metric tonnes, 6.6% higher than in July, 2022.
China produced 90.8 million tonnes in July, accounting for 57% of world output and rising 11.5% on July, 2022. World crude steel production outside China rose 0.7% compared to last July. Significant changes outside China include increases in India (+14.3%), Russia (+5.8% estimated) and Turkey (+6.4), as well as declines in South Korea (-9.0%) and Brazil (-4.7%).
Crude steel production in the first seven months of 2023 was 0.5% lower than in the same period last year.

Worldsteel recorded June world crude steel production in China at 91.1 million metric tonnes, 0.4% higher than in June, 2022. Chinese production in the first six months of 2023 was 0.8% higher than in the same period last year.
Data from China’s General Administration of Customs show June net finished steel exports (exports minus imports) rose 2% compared to June last year. Net finished steel exports in the first six months of 2023 were 45% higher than in the first six months of 2022.
Worldsteel published June, 2023 world crude steel production on Tuesday. World crude steel output was 158.8 million metric tonnes, 0.1% higher than in June, 2022.
China produced 91.1 million tonnes in June, accounting for 57% of world output and rising 0.4% on June, 2022. World crude steel production outside of China fell 0.8% compared to last June. Significant changes outside China include increases in India (+12.9%) and Iran (+17.4%), as well as declines in Brazil (-12.5%) and Germany (-8.4%).
Crude steel production in the first six months of 2023 was approximately 1.6% lower than in the same period last year.
Based on reported import licenses, US long products imports increased 20% from 358,000 short tons in June, 2022 to 428,000 tons last month. According to import licenses, rebar imports rose 112% in June compared to June, 2022 due to higher volumes mainly from Algeria and Egypt.
Long products imports in the first six months of 2023 were 22% lower than in the same period last year with wire rod showing the highest volume (-477,749 tons) and percentage (-46%) decline.
Based on reported import licenses, US flat products imports dropped 7% from 856,000 short tons in June, 2022 to 799,000 tons in June, 2023. Hot dip galvanized imports fell by the highest volume with imports down from Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea. In contrast, cut plate imports rose significantly due mainly to higher volumes from South Korea.
Flat products imports in the first six months of 2023 were 24% lower than in the same period last year with hot dip galvanized -32%, cold rolled -29%, hot rolled -21%, and cut plate +25%.
