To keep track of North American steel industry capacity additions, closures, idlings, and restarts we put together a downloadable list with links to announcements and/or news sources. The spreadsheet is organized by product (upstream, carbon long products, carbon flat roll, stainless & silicon, pipe & tube, downstream, and steel-related) and can be viewed on the Nerds of Steel website or downloaded. Let us know what you think and feel free to suggest additions or modifications.

Based on reported import licenses, US flat products imports rose 1% from 835,000 short tons in December to 841,000 tons in January. Flat products imports in January 2016 were 997,000 tons and in January 2015 they were 1,499,000 tons.

There was little change between December and January because hot rolled and hot dip galvanized imports fell by about the same volume as cut plate and cold rolled imports increased. The largest decline in import volumes came from hot roll, with significantly lower imports from the Netherlands and Korea, while the largest increase in volumes came from cold roll, with higher volumes from Vietnam and Turkey.

Worldsteel reported crude steel production in China at 67.2 million metric tonnes in December, 3.2% higher than in December 2015. Taking into account Worldsteel revisions, full-year output in 2016 was 1.2% higher than it was in 2015.

In addition, China’s net finished steel exports (exports minus imports) in December were 6.6 million tonnes, 30% lower than in December 2015, while full-year net exports were 4% lower in 2016 than in 2015. Full-year net exports as a portion of crude production remained steady between 2015 and 2016 at 12%.

Worldsteel published December and full-year 2016 global crude steel production on January 25th. World crude steel production was 134.1 million metric tonnes in December, 5.5% higher than in December 2015. Full-year 2016 production was 1,629 million tonnes, 0.8% higher than in 2015.

Other important changes in full-year output between 2015 and 2016 include a 7% increase in India, an 11% increase in Iran, a 9% drop in Brazil, a 5% decline in Turkey, and a 2% drop in the EU led by output reductions in the UK and Spain. US and Russian output remained steady year-on-year.

All the data for 2016 and for a number of prior years can be viewed in the downloadable spreadsheet below. Note that the monthly data may not match the annual summary data because the annual data includes estimates of other countries that only report annually.
